I tried the suggested approach of creating a numbered list and use cross-references. I have a problem the other way around: my text body is in 2 columns, but I want my footnotes to span both columns, so the footnotes look as one-column text. In the past there has been discussion about having footnotes in 2 columns, while the text body is in one column.
